Art in Bloom 2023

Art in Bloom at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts April 27 – 30, 2023

The Minnesota Herb Society has been participating in this spring event for forty years.
In 2023, the Herb Society is represented by Bonnie Hector, Deb Carpenter, Deb Nedden, and Carla Jefferson. We interpreted Furniture Covering, a beautiful silk embroidered piece created in the late 1800’s during the Qing Dynasty.

View it in Gallery 217. Join us Thursday, April 27th for Meet the Artist from 5-9. Speak with the Floral Artists about their inspiration, interpretation, and materials. For more information and other Art in Bloom events see the MIA website.

We are inspired by the delicate embroidery. Peonies, roses, chrysanthemums, ginger, and our favorite herbs are featured.

We would like to dedicate our 2023 Art in Bloom piece to our friend, fellow member, and artist, Eleanor R. Wagner. Elly was always a moving force for our Art in Bloom interpretations. We miss her energy, artistry, and creativity in our first year back after covid lockdown.

Our inspiration comes from ginger, used as a culinary and medicinal herb for centuries in Asian cultures. Ginger is the 2023 International Herb Association Herb of the Year. Peonies, roses, chrysanthemums, ranunculus, delphiniums, rosemary, chamomile, and bay laurel are featured in our interpretation.

Floral Artists admire their work

On the day of set up the roses we ordered came in the wrong color. Yellow roses were substituted at Thursday night’s Meet the Artist event. Both arrangements work, but the yellow really does pop.
